"Water is Life. Water is the foundation and element of all existence. It runs through our bodies and our lands. No matter your gender, your ethnicity, your sexual orientation, your history, your political party -- we ALL drink water. We have this in common. We are blessed by our water. We are blessed to have Lake Tahoe and the Carson River and Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River at our back doors. We have crystalline blue waters to escape to in the Summer; Snow capped mountains in the Winter. Clean water runs through our faucets and showers. We are blessed by our water. We have entered the fight for clean water against the extractive industries of this planet, those corporations with careless oil slicked footprints. Currently, in North Dakota the Dakota Access Pipeline has planned, built, and continued to construct a 1,134 mile oil pipeline through the heart of America and Standing Rock Sioux tribal land. It is to be drilled beneath the Missouri River, the water source for over 17 million people, to pump crude oil to a refinery in Patoka, Illinois. If this pipeline breaks --when this pipeline breaks-- as many many do, it will contaminate the Missouri River, the Mississippi River and all their veins. At Standing Rock, the location where the pipeline is set to drill and install beneath the waters, there are hundreds of water protectors from all over the globe gathered peacefully resisting the pipeline. They are standing in solidarity against the continued colonialism of Native land and people. They pray and sing and dance and give honor to the water and the lands, all despite being shot with rubber bullets, maced, censored, monitored, arrested and caged by a militarized police force for protecting water. This is the age we live in. We live in a country, a world, where those who stand for clean water are treated as terrorists and yet those who continue to rape, pillage, and siphon our lands for money are protected, above the law and conscience. Research this movement. Gather information. If we do not transition away from fossil fuels and the greed of extractive industries this could lead to Lake Tahoe becoming brown and polluted. This could mean oil slicked rivers in our own high desert. We Stand with Standing Rock because water is life. We can see it out our backdoors. We Stand with Standing Rock because we no longer can turn a blind eye to the blatant disrespect and careful extermination of our Native brothers and sisters. We Stand with Standing Rock because we cannot eat money or drink oil.We Stand with Standing Rock because we must come together to honor, remember, and protect our precious planet. We Stand with Standing Rock because we can see the world coming together in peace, in love, in justice."
"Headlines are pasted with red alerts from all sides: “Nazis and Liberals are rising. The Russians are hiding behind clever disguises. Watch out! Nuclear war and gay sex are about to happen. Be afraid of the strangers. Who knows where they come from. Hide. Give your power away to the TV. Number 45 is president.” Proletariat propaganda has intensified and reiterated our deepest wounds. Since Donald Trump took office, we have seen the nation become – or so we are shown – more divided. The racism, the class wars, the battle between the left and the right did not appear overnight. This country was built by Native Americans, slaves, genocide and imperialism: “us vs them.” Nothing we are seeing now is anything new. Trump did not cause this. He is simply the mirror to the smoke of our society, a perfect reflection to everything we have been trying to avoid. 45 has become a disguised blessing, a strange silver lining. Trump serves as a figurehead of our country’s subconscious. His image shows us how rotted we remain despite what we tell ourselves to cope. His image has shown us issues where we really haven’t made a whole lot of actual healing or progress. He is a man with unlimited privilege doing everything our country has always done, but now only more obvious. You see, disease cannot be cured if the disease remains unknown. Our traumas cannot be confronted, integrated or transformed if they are repressed. Our world and country cannot make actual change if we continue to live in the comfort of oblivion and apathy. Trump has been a wake call. He has shown us evil still exists as very real entities everywhere. He has called them out of the shadows into the light. How do we make actual change without hating the hate? You must be willing to see where you contribute to the broken system. Compassionately listen to all sides even if you do not agree with the other side. Let’s raise our maturity enough to engage in those tough discussions dissecting misunderstanding to create understanding. Let’s take ownership of what we see and change it. Let’s choose to do better. Let’s choose to be better. We have the power to choose kindness in small moments. We have the power to educate ourselves and change the system from the ground up. We have the power to stand up for strangers and each other. Remember who you are. Where can you be stronger in your convictions and values? Where can you change your actions to align with a world where black lives really do matter? Take ownership of your direct action or lack of. Now is the time for you to live your beliefs. What side of history will you be on?"
